Stephanie Korchynski
,BA MA CCC
In recent years, I have been honored to grow and learn as a mental health therapist, dedicated to supporting clients from diverse backgrounds in their healing journeys. My educational background includes a diploma in Chemical and Biosciences Technology, an Advanced Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, and a Master’s in Counselling Psychology. Throughout my academic career, I have sought additional certifications to deepen my understanding and broaden my skills. These include Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST), Psychological First Aid, Counselling on Access to Lethal Means, Crisis Counselling, Exploitation Knowledge and Awareness, and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention. I am also trained in the Gottman Method for Couples, Dream Analysis, ADHD, Attachment Theory, Play Therapy, and other specialized areas, enabling me to offer a wide range of therapeutic approaches.
During my studies, I worked at various group homes in Winnipeg, supporting Indigenous youth and young adults. My journey began at The Link, where I assisted young adults in the CLDS program, actively encouraging engagement in culturally based events and ceremonies. I was privileged to participate in activities like the deer skinning ceremony, which fostered a sense of community and cultural pride among the youth. The Link also provided me with Circle of Courage training, enhancing my understanding of the Medicine Wheel and its connection to the mental and social well-being of Indigenous youth.
Following my time at The Link, I held a position at Marymound, where I deepened my appreciation for Indigenous cultural teachings, including the Seven Teachings and their application in life. I later worked at Neecheewam as a Street Reach Outreach Worker, where I searched for missing youth affected by exploitation. In this role, I was trained in Therapeutic Crisis Solutions, focusing on the impact of residential schools, intergenerational trauma, and culturally sensitive approaches to working with Indigenous youth. Guided by a cultural advisor, I attended Sun Dance Ceremonies, Full Moon Ceremonies, Sweats, and Relationship Days, enriching my understanding and application of culturally appropriate care.
More recently, I have worked with adult Indigenous females in the corrections system, supporting their healing journeys through a culturally-informed lens, and collaborating with the facility’s cultural team to integrate Indigenous practices into counseling care plans. Additionally, I served as a mental health therapist for The Link, where I embraced diverse cultural practices and developed my therapeutic skills.
At Winnipeg Narrative Therapy and the Aulneau Renewal Center, I have supported youth with mental health challenges using culturally informed perspectives and staying updated on cultural events and workshops to help youth connect with their heritage. My recent experience in an isolated northern community in Little Grand Rapids offered a unique opportunity to contribute to the community's well-being. I provided counselling to adults and youth, with a wide range of different concerns and needs.
I also provided consultation services to Aurora Treatment Centre, which is an addictions treatment facility. With my strong background in additions treatment, I was able to develop an intensive outpatient and family connect program to help diversify treatment needs and goals that are lacking.
I also hold certification and liability insurance in personal training, allowing me to integrate physical well-being into therapeutic plans upon request.
In my private practice, I work with clients of all ages, beliefs, and goals, offering support tailored to each person’s unique path. My approach is mainly CBT-focused, but I incorporate DBT, ACT, Humanistic, Gestalt, and Psychoanalytical theories to offer a well-rounded and personalized therapy experience. I do specialize in Trauma counselling and EMDR, with a specialized focus in childhood trauma. With a strengths-based approach, I am passionate about helping clients identify the most effective paths for their growth, healing, and self-discovery.
