Rebecca Tokay
,LPC
My name is Rebecca Tokay. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) registered with the Louisiana Board of Examiners with license #3770. I earned my Bachelors of Science in Psychology and then my Masters of Science in Counseling Psychology - both from Louisiana State University in Shreveport, LA. I obtained my license in 2013 and have been practicing for over 10 years in the field. I have experience in working with children, adolescents, and adults who have problems with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Oppositional Disorder, Past and Current Trauma’s, Grief, Family Issues, Personal Problems that they want to overcome and Relationship problems between family, peers and teachers/authority figures as well as those with stress and anxiety, anger management, motivation, self-esteem and low self-confidence, & depression.
I approach counseling through a cognitive-behavioral, solution-focused perspective. I focus more on the symptoms that are problematic at the time than the actual "diagnosis" that has been given as you can have difficult times in life without having a disorder and by focusing more on symptoms, we take away the powerlessness that many feel when they have been diagnosed with something. I believe that by understanding why we think and behave the way we do, we will better understand the root of our problems and by developing solution-focused goals, the client can effectively work through their problems and learn to change their thoughts and behaviors themselves. I utilize worksheets, journals, scheduled therapeutic activities, such as scheduling pleasant activities and following through on them, and other techniques to help clients learn how to actually apply the techniques that they are being taught rather than just being told how to do them. During sessions, I will review the most recent worksheets that have been completed and discuss ways that the techniques were applied during the week or where they could have been applied to improve the situation at hand.
I also believe that the client is a full partner in the therapeutic process and can control the level of their success by being fully prepared and present in sessions and making the best effort possible to use the techniques taught and to be as open and honest with me about the effectiveness of the techniques so that changes can be made as needed to ensure the best possible outcome. This is not an easy journey to go through, but with putting in the effort, it will be one of the more rewarding journeys one can take - and I would be very honored to help you along the way.
