Hugh Alexis

My name is Hugh Alexis. I was born and raised in the Caribbean. I earned my undergraduate degree in Social Work from Midwestern State University in Texas. I then moved to the state of Maryland and pursued my Masters degree in Clinical Social Work from the University of Maryland School of Social Work. I am currently completing my Doctoral degree in Psychology from California Southern University. In the past, I have worked in addictions treatment, treatment foster care, child protective services, community mental health, and I have also worked as a rehabilitation specialist in a psychiatric rehabilitation program. I have been working as a social worker for approximately 21 yrs. Currently, I am in private practice. I have been in private practice for approximately 15yrs. In my practice I work with children, adolescents and adults. I utilize an eclectic approach leaning more towards cognitive behavior therapy. What I have learned the most from my work as a therapist is that patients tend to make change not based on how intelligent the therapist is, but how genuine the therapist present. I believe that we all have challenges in our lives. My goal is to build solid therapeutic alliance with my patients by listening to their challenges, sometimes trying to help them restructure their thought processes, sometimes confronting maladaptive thought processes, at times validating feelings. I am always mindful to treat all patients with respect, dignity and unconditional positive regard.
